Public release note: Route planning on iPhone and iPad can now use a MapKit walking start within 75 m of the selected center. The app shows offsets greater than 5 m without drawing a straight connector, rejects candidates whose resolved endpoints are reported over water, and clears stale cross-device progress. Zero-route results now return to “No route yet” with retry actions on iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch.

Nearby mapped walking starts

Route planning on iPhone, iPad, and Mac can use a MapKit walking start within 75 m of the selected center. Offsets greater than 5 m remain visible instead of being hidden by a straight connector. Mac route planning requires Plus.

Water-endpoint guardrail

Route candidates are rejected when their resolved endpoints are reported over water. This is a bounded endpoint check, not a claim that every part of a route has been classified.

Clearer zero-route recovery

When no route is returned, iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch return to “No route yet” with actions for trying again instead of leaving a stale loading state.

Fresh cross-device progress

Stale cross-device route-planning progress is cleared so an older status is less likely to outlive the request that created it.

Nearby starts remain visible and bounded

A nearby walking start can make a selected center inside a building or away from a mapped path eligible for planning. When that start is more than 5 m away, the offset is shown without a straight connector that could imply a walkable crossing.

The water check applies to the resolved route endpoints reported to the app. Estimated AQI remains informational planning guidance rather than a personal exposure measurement or safety guarantee.

Public release note: New on iPhone and Apple Watch: Plus can start a Guided AQI-Aware Walk for an eligible selected walking route. Apple Watch follows the outbound and return course with visible and haptic midpoint, off-course, recovery, GPS, pause, early-turnback, and finish states. With permission, the walk and actual route are saved to Apple Health; Air Quality Router keeps no separate workout history. The completion recap shows the Estimated Route AQI frozen for the planned route at the start, including source and time. It is not a completed-path AQI or personal exposure measurement. Ordinary route planning and Apple Maps remain available without Health access. Mac behavior is unchanged in this release.

Current platform scope

Air Quality Router supports iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch. Nearby MapKit walking starts, visible start offsets, reported-water endpoint rejection, stale-progress clearing, and zero-route retry actions apply to route planning on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Apple Watch receives the zero-route recovery actions. Mac route planning still requires Plus. Plus expands planning depth and is not a safety upgrade.
